Clean town award for Dawlish
13/03/09
Dawlish has been named as one of only six towns in the entire country to achieve a prestigious five-star rating in the biannual Clean Britain Awards, officially making it one of the cleanest towns in Britain.
Run by the British Cleaning Council, the awards celebrate the cleanest and tidiest towns and cities across the UK. The process involves a written entry followed by a rigorous inspection of the town which examines external public areas and the exterior of buildings where there is general public access – such as town halls, car parks and open spaces.
Cllr Gordon Hook, Teignbridge Executive Spokesperson for Environmental Services said:
"We're delighted to win this award, which is testament to the hard work which goes in to keeping Dawlish, and indeed the rest of Teignbridge, clean and green.
"Our cleansing team works extremely hard, often on public holidays and in bad weather, to ensure that the environment is free of litter. They can be unsung heroes, so it's great to see their work recognised in this way.
"On a wider scale this award recognises the efforts put in by the council to provide and empty bins, tackle flytipping, prevent overgrown hedgerows – and generally ensure that Teignbridge is kept tidy.
"Of course there's always more work to do, and we'd encourage anybody who comes across litter or flytipping in a public place to call our freephone hotline on 0800 328 6402 so we can dispatch our Blitz Team to clean it up."
Cllr Rosalind Prowse, Teignbridge Ward Member for Dawlish South West said:
"I am delighted to hear that Dawlish has won this award. It is the result of all the hard work by the cleaning team and the fact that the residents really care for their town and take great pride in its presentation.
"I am sure that this shows all concerned that their work and enthusiasm has been noted and appreciated."
Cllr Humphrey Clemens, Teignbridge Ward Member for Dawlish South West said:
"We are very proud to have achieved this five star rating in the biannual Clean Britain Awards. We take the cleanliness of our town very seriously and it is greatly helped by the employment of a Parish Maintainer and Waterfowl Wardens as well as the Teignbridge cleansing staff, who as well as litter picking act as eyes and ears to identify any problems in the making.
"Congratulations and well done to all those whose efforts have been recognised."
WELL DONE DAWLISH!!!
